Sri Lanka experiences two distinct monsoon seasons: the southwest and the northeast monsoon, affecting different regions of the country.

The best time to visit Tangalle’s beaches, including Silent Beach, is during the dry season in Southwest Sri Lanka, from December to March. Pleasant weather can also be found during the shoulder seasons in April to May and October to November.

We recommend visiting beaches in the morning or afternoon, as it can get very hot around midday.

How to Get to Silent Beach in Tangalle?

First of all, go to Tangalle, which is easily accessible by road from major cities like Colombo, Galle, Mirissa and Ella. For us, it was the next destination after Ella. You can either rent a car for your entire trip in Sri Lanka, use private transfers like taxis, or like we did, use the bus system to get around in Sri Lanka.

We loved the mix of taking the public bus to move between destinations and renting a scooter at each place to get around. Buses in Sri Lanka are very fast and very cheap.

If you choose to stay in Tangalle Town, it’s a 10-minute ride by tuk-tuk or motorbike to Silent Beach. If you take a tuk-tuk, make sure to negotiate the price before departing. It should be not more than 100-150 LKR per kilometer. A motorbike should cost around 1500-2000 LKR per day.

We booked our accommodation, Tanzanite Place outside of Tangalle within walking distance from Silent Beach, located right on the main coastal road. Coming from Ella by bus, we had to get off in Tangalle City and take another bus continuing on the southwest coast in the direction of Galle. We asked the public bus to drop us right in front of our homestay, and it worked perfectly.

Our Experience at Silent Beach

Silent Beach near Tangalle is characterized by its powdery golden sand, lined with palm trees, and touched by the azure waves of the Indian Ocean.

Unfortunately, when we visited, the waves were too high for us to swim. However, it was amazing enjoying this stretch of paradise, relaxing and picnicking.

There were just a few more people on the beach, relaxing under the palm tree shade. We felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves and felt that this place is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka.

Where to Go after Silent Beach?

Silent Beach in Tangalle is, in our opinion, the perfect first or last stop on the south coast. Afterward, we recommend either continuing to travel the southwest coast, stopping at places like Mirissa and Unawatuna, until Galle, or heading north to Ella.

Conclusion

Silent Beach in Tangalle is the best destination to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature. Also, it was the perfect first stop after visiting Ella. From here, many places in the south were a short bus ride away.
