Sri Lanka has two distinct monsoon seasons: the southwest and the northeast monsoon, affecting different regions of the country.
The best time to visit the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is during the dry season in Southwest Sri Lanka from December to March. Pleasant weather can also be found during the shoulder seasons in April to May and October to November, with fewer crowds.
The morning and afternoon are always the best times for capturing beautiful light in photographs. However, the early morning has significantly fewer people compared to the afternoon.

Train Times at the Nine Arch Bridge
There are six trains a day running between Ella and Demodara, passing by the Nine Arch Bridge. Unfortunately, the times change frequently. To get updated information about train times, we recommend asking your accommodation or the train station in Ella one day before.
Trains in Sri Lanka are often late, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait longer than expected. Enjoy the scenery, and if needed, there are small stands with snacks and drinks.
When we visited, there were two trains scheduled in the early morning in a short time period, giving us an additional reason to visit in the morning.
How to get to the Nine Arch Bridge?
There are different options to reach the Nine Arch Bridge. Our favorite one is to head towards the Ella Railway Station and then follow the railway tracks towards Demodara until you reach a tunnel. After passing through it, you will arrive at the Nine Arch Bridge. Locals often walk on railway tracks as it is the most direct way between villages.
For walking, there are two points where you can start: one at Nine arch bridge car parking and one at Nine Arches Bridge Path. Both require you to first take a tuk-tuk from Ella town. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey; it should be 100-150 LKR per kilometer.
The easiest and most comfortable way to get to the Nine Arch Bridge is by a tuk-tuk ride from Ella to this parking area.
Our Nine Arch Bridge Experience
We recommend visiting the Nine Arch Bridge in the early morning before the first trains pass. It’s the best time for morning light and fewer people.
We had the best views from the side of the bridge, where we could see all of the arches. We found it to be a beautiful place for both photography and videography. Another highlight was definitely taking a walk on the bridge itself.
